Hot Lemon Water: Why you should drink it + a recipe for a detox elixir

Hot lemon water. Something that’s been talked about for while now, but it’s so simple, so what’s the buzz all about? By now, most people have heard that drinking hot lemon water is good for you, but either you’re not sure why or you know some benefits but you haven’t been convinced enough to adopt the habit. Yes, it is so incredibly simple, yet it has so many advantages. It is something everyone can easily do to immediately improve your health, and the way they start you day. As a matter of fact, it’s a part of Bare Nutrition’s morning ritual, which you can read all about here.

So what exactly do you need to do and how can it make you healthier? Simply start your day by filling a mug with warm water, squeeze in the juice of ½ of a lemon, and reap these benefits:

  1. Hydration

Many of us live in a frequent state of slight dehydrated, and everyone wakes up in a dehydrated state. Lemon water rehydrates our bodies quickly, because number one, it’s water (duh), and number two, lemons contain natural electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, and calcium).

  1. Immunity

Lemons are great for immune support. They are packed with vitamin C and potassium, which both boost our immune systems.

  1. Alkalinity

Lemon water is alkalizing. Alkalized water and alkalizing foods are cleansing for the body, which makes them great for our skin and can also help with weight loss. Not to mention, alkaline environments are anti-cancerous, as cancer thrives in an acidic environment (the opposite of alkaline). Alkalinity is also anti-aging by preventing oxidation of tissues by free radicals (the primary cause of accelerated aging). In addition, most of our digestive system, as well as our skeletal and muscular systems, function optimally in an alkaline environment, which potentially can improve athletic performance.

  1. Digestion

The warm temperature of the water gently wakes up our bodies and our digestive system. This helps to get things moving in the morning which in turn helps us assimilate the nutrients we need throughout the day and rid our body of toxins and waste that can cause stubborn fat.

That’s the basics. Hot lemon water in the morning is a must, but feel free to drink more throughout the day or in the afternoon or evening, too. If you want to get fancy with your hot lemon water, you can try adding ginger and/or turmeric to up the cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties. You can also try our Detox Elixir, which is found below and great in the morning or any time of day, or you can try our Glowing Skin & Gut Shot, which we often take with our lemon water each morning!
